There is a greenway in our neighborhood. It is the perfect place to walk Floyd. Pretty much every day, we walk down the greenway a little and back for him to do his "business." Today I noticed a sock discarded on the side of the trail. I've seen such things before without really stopping to take notice but what caught my eye today was the fact that it appeared to be a brand new sock. There was no wear on it and the fabric was perfectly white. Then about 20 feet down farther the trail, I found it's match! Now I am left wondering why anyone would discard a perfectly good pair of socks?
Did an ungrateful teenager get them as a Christmas gift and despise them so much he felt the need to jettison them at his first opportunity? He stealthily slipped them in his jacket pocket as he headed out to meet his friends at the park. As soon as he rounded the corner and was out of sight of his house, he tossed them with disdain to the side of the greenway and happily peddled off free of the offending footwear.
I envision a husband got them in his stocking (much like KC did) and happily packed them in his gym bag to use at the Y, which is less than a half mile down the greenway. He turned away for a few minutes to prepare his water bottle and unbeknownst to him, his 5 year old son unzipped the bag to find a comb but forgot to zip the bag back up. The man, finished with the water bottles, turned back around gave his son a hug and a pat on his head, tossed the bag over his shoulders and headed out the door for his warm up run to the Y. The bouncing of his gait eventually forced the socks out one at a time leaving them abandoned on the side of the trail.
Perhaps a young woman was using them as gloves as she went out for a run but discovered part way through her route that it was too warm for sock-gloves and tossed them to the side to pick up later. When she got home she was distracted by a phone call from her best friend from college and all thoughts of the discarded socks slipped her mind and they were left there.
I will probably never know the real story behind the lost socks but there are three possibilities for you to ponder. Do you have a "Story of the Lost Socks?"
I'm a mother of 2 girls living in NC. I've dabbled in photography on and off but really this is just for fun
