This is the media center at Laurel Park Elementary School. In my day, it would have been called the library but times are changing and now it's the media center. It is quiet stunning. The ceiling above the computer area is two stories and there are windows that let in natural light. One of the perks of a brand-new school is that the building is unique and beautiful. The architects made some really stunning spaces when they designed LPES. I think the media center is one of the most amazing accomplishments.
This is the Non-fiction area and it's only about a third of the place. The "Everyone" section (picture books) is to the right. The Fiction section is to the left. There is also a huge office space and a storage space for supplies. Most elementary schools' libraries pale in comparison to this one.
I volunteer for an hour on Monday afternoons helping students check books out and shelving returned books. Shelving is a rather cathartic activity for me. I normally have my headphones on and listen to (appropriately) audio books. I am always amazed at how messed up the shelves get in a one week period, Often, I end up taking most of the books off the shelf and rearranging them. It's a little frustrating but I feel so much better once I've done it.
Mrs. Woodard is the assistant and she is the most wonderful, sweet and friendly woman I've ever met. She was the teacher assistant of the year last year with good reason. I've never seen her not smiling. The kids love her and she does anything she can to help out the school and the students. We are very lucky to have her and this phenomenal media center.
I'm a mother of 2 girls living in NC. I've dabbled in photography on and off but really this is just for fun
