I was sitting in our room working on the pics from the shower when KC pounded on the window with such urgency, I was certain a visit to the ER was imminent. I leapt up out of my chair and to the door. He was frantically pointing at the ground. When I peered out, I was astonished to find this guy curled up. We debated what we should do about it. My initial reaction was to kill is since the kids are always running up and down and this guy didn't seem to be overly shy. KC wanted to move it. We decided that the children needed to see it to be aware of what a copperhead looks like and that they are definitely around. Turns out after some more investigation, it's not even a copperhead. It's just an incredibly large garter snake! I've never seen one that color or that large. Both I think were what confused us.
I got close enough to get a picture but still had to crop significantly. This one was taken immediately before he struck at me. No, I was no where near close enough. (ISO 400, 70mm, f3.2, 1/800)
KC and Gary used a cookie sheet, a rake and a trash can to remove him and released him at the top of the hill. Here are some pictures of the relocation procedure.
On a completely different topic, Eyal knows the guy who owns the company that makes those big flat floats. He got the kids some remnants and they had a blast with them in the water.
I'm a mother of 2 girls living in NC. I've dabbled in photography on and off but really this is just for fun
