Delaney has come a long way in the past 6 months. She made A/B honor roll for the second consecutive quarter so we showed up for the recognition ceremony this morning.
Delaney's elementary school education, especially in math, was not the best. She came into middle school hating math and thinking she was terrible at it. Coming from our family where both parents have engineering degrees from a fairly decent college, we were distraught about that: not upset with Delaney, but with the fact that her educational experience up to this point had lead her to believe she was bad at math. Yes, she has many gifts and we are very proud of her for being the wonderful young lady she is becoming but no parent wants to hear the despair in their daughter's voice when she is struggling with a new concept because she doesn't think she's smart enough to grasp it.
I may not love her school but I will give them credit for doing a good job of teaching Delaney math in a way that made sense to her. In the first quarter, Delaney got a B in math. We were thrilled that she appeared to be becoming more comfortable with it.
In the second semester, something clicked and she took off. Her grade went from a B to an A. She started to enjoy math class and was working very hard to even get the bonus questions! Imagine our delight when they announced her name for the second quarter math award! I normally don't give much credence to these awards ceremonies since in elementary school they were pretty much pulled out of a hat. There were so many categories that almost everyone in the class received some kind of recognition, thus diluting any meaning, but in this case there were over 150 students and only 6 of them were acknowledged for their hard work in math. That points out that perhaps, they were actually paying attention to the fact that some kids came to them with a weaker base and worked very hard to catch up and even excel. So, while I still think the school is overly competitive and has too much emphasis on test scores and AP classes, I will say, they have done a remarkable job in this instance. Congratulations Delaney! You worked very hard and are reaping the rewards. Keep it up kid.
I'm a mother of 2 girls living in NC. I've dabbled in photography on and off but really this is just for fun
